From Game Design to Graphic Design

Finished my CalArts Game Design certification! Favorite part was probably character design in terms of the most fun — I made some boars out of sweetgum seed pods — though having to think through mechanics and draft an actual game design document was super satisfying.

Wrapped up the first four-session run of Coyote & Crow, which had a learning curve, but I had really supportive players who knew that going in. After spending enough time creating an online “character keeper” for that game, and from what I enjoyed doing in game design, I decided to lean into graphic design.

After enrolling in CalArts’ graphic design certificate program, my first assignment was to create something denotative — meaning to simply show an object using a variety of techniques, rather than trying to say anything “about” the object. My favorite was the apple spread of almond butter I then re-tinted and de-shadowed in Figma.
